Rest

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

Rest is extremely important for any athlete. Passive and active rests are two different ways of recovery in sports. Passive rest means doing nothing and includes no training. Active rest is proactively doing something to help your body recover. This may include a light jog, stretching or a maintenance work out plan at a lower intensity. Coaches and players chose what type of rest to implement depending on their competition and training cycle. Spiritual rest is also very important for any Disciple of Christ.

In Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus teaches the hearers how to rest:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

This form of spiritual rest sounds more like an active rest. The first thing we are encouraged to do is “come to me”. Instead of sitting and not doing anything, we should go to Him. This is a proactive step; a decision that requires action. Jesus promises that He will give us rest. Resting is a gift that Jesus gives that we must receive if we desire to accept it. The second step is to “take my yoke upon you and learn from me”. His burden is light and he has a gentle and humble heart. Jesus promises us that we will find rest for our souls. This is an amazing promise!

Are you coming to Jesus when you are weary and burdened?

Are you taking His yoke upon you, which is easy?

Are you replacing your burden with His burden, which is light?

Are you receiving rest as a gift?
