SCAS News Letter - April 2024

We are grateful to our Lord for all our opportunities to serve in and through sports during this past term. Here is feedback on some of the highlights.

OUTREACHES

We have the privilege of impacting the lives of schoolchildren in the Western Cape on a weekly basis. Members of the SCAS team visit Cloetesville High School on Tuesday mornings, Calling Academy on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and St Paul’s Primary from time to time. On Thursday afternoons, we run programs at Idas Valley Sports Grounds, and on Friday afternoons, at Markotter Indoor Centre, in collaboration with the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport.

On Thursday evenings, we run a 360Coach Bible study in Stellenbosch, primarily for soccer coaches. We handed out whistles, soccer balls, and Bibles to all these coaches.

The Pearl Project is a community upliftment initiative, and SCAS had the privilege of participating in team-building activities and sports ministry with them.

We also did sessions with the Endurucad athlete group at Stellenbosch High School, and we plan to be involved regularly by placing two of our staff there as chaplains to these high-performance athletes.

GREY COLLEGE U14 RUGBY TOURNAMENT

It was SCAS’s first year serving at the Grey College u/14 Tournament, which took place from 20 to 24 March 2024 at Grey College, Bloemfontein. Our team shared the Gospel, facilitated Discovery Bible Studies (DBS), and engaged intentionally with coaches and players. We also served by assisting the organizers and the twenty teams with practical tasks.

‍KEARSNEY EASTER RUGBY FESTIVAL

Our team traveled directly from Bloemfontein to Hillcrest in KwaZulu-Natal Kearsney for the prestigious Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival. The SCAS team consisted of eighteen volunteers (chaperones) from across South Africa. They served the teams, engaging intentionally to build strong relationships, and our team ensured everything ran smoothly and on time. At the Easter Church Service, our chaperones led the worship, gave testimonies, and did Bible readings.

During the tournament, the chaperones shared the Gospel and had Bible studies with numerous players accepting Jesus Christ as their Saviour. We handed out Bibles to some coaches and players.

‍3D COACHING

After signing up thirteen coaches last week, we have taken almost 900 coaches through the 3D Course for Certification. We are trying to support these coaches in many ways, one of which is planned ‘Coach and Spouse Timeouts’, which will help couples focus on their relationships with each other and with God.

CAMPS

So far this year (until the end of April), we have hosted thirty-three camps at “The SCAS Eiland Campsite and Training Centre.” We also look forward to hosting eighteen international students for the Global Impact Internship in June. We will also host ISLS (The International Sport Leadership School) from July to September.

We are also continuously upgrading the campsite (especially after last year's flood damage), equipment, and operational systems.

COUNTRY EXPANSION

We are busy expanding throughout South Africa as more opportunities to serve in and through sport become available. We are onboarding experienced people as full-time staff in Paarl, Durban, and Pretoria. From now on, all field staff will be doing salary support, meaning we will all look for people who can contribute towards our salaries through SCAS. The Gospel is free, but ministry costs money.
